Now is the perfect time of year to explore the newest addition to the National Park Service family of National Monuments and Parks is the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument in Cambridge, Maryland. You’ll appreciate the courage and achievement of this national hero when you visit her homeland in Dorchester County on the Choptank River. The bucolic marshes, fields and forests of this wilderness were somehow penetrable by Tubman and the enslaved individuals determined to follow their Moses to freedom. You can follow her path too, by first heading to the Visitors Center for a Byway Driving Tour Map, audiotape and to view the exhibits. Then visit key sites that tell the story of the Underground Railroad—like the Harriet Tubman Museum, a one-room 19^th century African American schoolhouse, and Brodess Farm, Tubman’s birthplace.
