Washington DC is celebrating America 250 anniversary with daily events like the Great America State Fair, military flyovers and a ferris wheel on the National Mall.

It’s been hot, sticky, sunny nearly every day, and we’ll likely have thunderstorms in the late afternoons.

While this is a big holiday, this hot weather is typical for a summer day in DC. So what are locals wearing, you ask? The lightest clothes they can find (with relative modesty). Here are some looks I’ve seen around town. Most of these were taken at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market and at the Phillips Collection, a wonderful private art museum.

It can be very hot in the sun, so I recommend bringing a hat and sunglasses.

Comfortable sandals and sneakers are the best footwear. Make sure you carry some bandaids in case you get a blister.

Crossbody bags weigh less on your shoulders. It’s also smart to carry a foldable tote bag, as you have to pay 10 cents for a shopping bag in DC.

While it’s hot and humid most days, we still enjoy getting outside and exploring the city’s museums and events. Washington DC feels very safe and taking the Metro is the best way to get around.(they have long escalators that take you underground).

Whatever you wear, choose something comfortable. Women typically wear sundresses and men wear collared polo shirts when dining out (classic shorts are fine for men). Umbrellas do double-duty as sun protection and coverage for summer storms. Please bring a beverage to hydrate, though you can find water bottles anywhere you happen to be.

If you enjoy shopping, there are many fashionable boutiques in neighborhoods like Dupont Circle, Georgetown, NoMa/Convention Center and Union Market. I hope you have a wonderful visit!
